Dear Friends,
Thank you very much for your membership and ongoing support of Temple Israel. We look forward to another year of strengthening our community together; celebrating Shabbat, High Holy Days, festivals and life cycle events; learning, worshipping, and providing support to one another. In response to your thoughtful input, this package reflects how we have improved both our membership system and the way we communicate it to you.
Our aim is to make membership with Temple Israel within reach of those seeking to connect with like minded Jews, in an inclusive and welcoming environment. We recognize that people have a range of financial abilities, based on their income and life circumstances and, at the same time, we have to ensure that Temple Israel can cover our basic operating costs. We believe we have achieved this balance. Please review the enclosed. Your membership statement (2009-2010) has the following components:
- Basic Membership Fee: given the current economic situation and in order to be in line with other congregations in Ottawa, you will see that we have reduced our basic membership fee, which includes High Holy Day tickets for all children, in addition to all other membership benefits.
- Sustaining Contribution Request: we are requesting an additional amount from those members who are able to contribute, in order to allow us to accommodate members who are experiencing financial difficulty.
- Oneg Shabbat Sponsorship: members taking turns sponsoring an Oneg Shabbat allows us to offer a light Kiddush following our Shabbat morning services, when members can meet and connect with one another.
- Security Levy: we have found it necessary to request a special security levy to allow us to make the necessary arrangements for High Holy Day Services and at other times during the year, when deemed necessary.
- Maintenance Reserve: given the age of our building, we have been advised to anticipate some major capital repairs, to which we are asking all members to contribute, as this is not covered through our basic operating budget.
- Guest High Holy Day Tickets: If you have out-of-town guests coming to join you in Ottawa for the High Holy Days, you can order guest tickets for them at a nominal fee. See form to order inside your package.
We welcome your calls with questions, concerns, or ideas on how we can make your membership with Temple Israel better meet your needs, those of your family, and the community.
Sincerely,
S Mendelsohn
